Tay Brig Fae the Dundee Law
The Tay Bridge carries the railway across the Firth of Tay south from Dundee to Wormit in Fife. It is 2.75 miles long and is the second bridge to occupy the site.
The first Tay Bridge opened in 1878. Its lightweight lattice design was relatively low cost. It had only a single track. On 28 December 1879, the bridge collapsed in high winds. Seventy-five passengers and crew in a train plunged to their deaths in the icy waters of the Tay. The disaster stunned the whole country and sent shock waves through the Victorian engineering community. The ensuing enquiry revealed that the design of the bridge had not allowed for high winds. At the time of the collapse, a gale estimated at force ten or eleven blasted down the Tay estuary.
A second bridge was constructed of iron and steel with a double-track parallel to the remains of the first bridge. Work began in July 1883, and the new bridge opened in 1887. The bridge was strengthened and refurbished in 2003.

Largely Inconsequential
Fascinating for Wee Blogger & pals — anybody else, not so much.
This website is my commentary on unsubstantial matters; it’s a learning vehicle and testbed for web design tools and ideas. The look and style of the site may change from time to time. Don’t expect mention of sex, religion or politics in the content.
The personal blog content helps me keep in touch with friends, colleagues and family spread around three continents too. So I kill two birds with one stone.
